What are Earthquakes and where do they Occur?
What is An Earthquake?
An Earthquake is when two tectonic plates snag against each other. When this happens the plates can move and build up energy. Eventually the plates break and the energy is released in the form Seismic-waves. Click here to learn more about how earthquakes energy is released.
Where do earthquakes happen?
Earthquakes mostly happen around the edge of tectonic plates.
This is also called a fault line The reason this happens here is because it is the only part of the earth's crust that moves. Fault lines are the edges of tectonic plates and as they move sometimes they create earthquakes.
What fault line does California lay on?
California lays on the San Andreas Fault which is located across most of California. It runs about 180 miles on land. Because of where the fault line is California deals with lots of earthquakes.
